The large windows and the design of the interior spaces make alive and liveable the philosophy and the style of the library: create the right conditions for setting in motion the thought and the eyes … to make cultural experience !!! We are in the library, but through the windows we see that the snow that continues to fall. We sit in the conference room for the presentations and we take advantage of the availability of Maj Eriksson to ask her some questions. The conversation allows us to capture the aspects that most interest us:

  • learn about the organization and mission of the library in Östersund
  • facilitate an exchange of ideas and experiences to see if and how public libraries can favor and promote the adults’ education.

This is our report…

“Often one wonders if the book is bound to have a future. But I try to ask, the bread is bound to have a future? And the rose, songs for children, the rain of May: for all these things there is a future? Perhaps it is important to ask though human beings are to have a future. About this you can also doubt in sad moments . But if the answer is yes, then the book will have a future “.

Astrid Lindgren

The municipal library of Ӧstersund, along with succursali in Brunflo and Torvalla, constitute a very important cultural resource not only for the city but for the entire municipality in Ӧstersund The library can count on 35 units of staff (mainly librarians and some technical), coordinated by a management group consisting of three persons: the director, the deputy director and a developer of project, which deals with the planning, organization and planning the various activities and cultural events.

The guidelines and the allocation of budget resources and cultural activities, belong to the “culture and recreation”. These resources intended for the library provisions are made on two separate items of expenditure: the budget for the population and the budget for the school library service. This is how they are used …

  1. A SYNERGY DYNAMIC AND QUALIFIED WITH THE PRIMARY SCHOOLS OF THE MUNICIPALITY

Skolbibliotekscentralen – SBC (central school library) is a professional and educational resource for the staff of primary schools in the Municipality. In addition to training and support for teachers’ organization and management of school libraries (thematic catalogs, education resources …)

Among the most popular and used services is the loan to schools of “thematic boxes “. The boxes contain books on topics related to the school curriculum or freely chosen by teachers and pupils.

  1. A LIBRARY FOR EVERY INHABITED CENTER: Välkommen TILL BIBLIOTEKSBUSSEN!

Swedish law requires that each municipality must ensure library services to its citizens, taking into consideration the local situations and organizational needs. The Bibliobus service is the answer to these needs.

The service, available Monday to Thursday reaches 40 primary schools, nine village schools more peripheral and many other locations where it is no longer active schools for education. A total of 81 the staging points, served on a monthly basis from the mobile library.

To better understand what is meant by public service: The most important stopping point is where to wait for the bibliobus there are three children and one pensioner !!!!

  • children and school
  • young people
  • adults

The library, as a public service and social promotion has specific priorities: children, youth, persons with disabilities or language difficulties. However, the watchwords are welcome and meet the needs of all … in the living house of culture.

“For me, the library was not only familiarize with the walls of books arranged in neat rows. The library offered me the space and the diversity of the horizons, which allowed me to travel .. Upon entering the library, I possessed the world, I dominated immense spaces by simply reading a book …

WE HELP THE CHILDREN TO GROW … … COMMUNICATE …. WITH-LIVE …

… The director is keen to highlight the commitment to children and awareness-raising initiatives for reading, from an early age. … Here is what she says: “At birth, every baby receives” the first book of the child “. When they turn four months they can come to the library for ..eating, licking, biting books … We work a lot with the parents and the nursery school. With teachers of the nursery school we organize visits, meetings and activities in the library.

At age six, when they begin to attend primary school, they receive a special book: “The book of the child”.

In fourth grade we offer activities for children to learn autonomously to use the catalog and to search for books. The cataloging system is centralized at the national level and the books arrive in the library already cataloged. We then proceed with initiatives such as the young readers club, which meets twice a month and cultural events organized monthly.

Welcome in the forest of books …

  • Integration and language promotion

Among the initiatives that receive the most successful is that of the “twin pack”, a service for learning the languages, specifically intended for children who come from abroad …. There are many parents and preschools who request it … the package consists of a plastic box containing two children’s books illustrated by the history of famous people: the old Festus, Alfie Atkins, Mamma Moo and Mulle Meck  … One of the two books is in Swedish and the other in one of the following languages: Arabic, Kurdish, periModerno Persian, Polish, Russian, Somali and turkish and other … Currently, there are twelve twin packages packed and ready for the loan. Packages twins are placed on the shelves of the library dedicated to the “other languages”. In addition to the “twin pack”, we offer a service for children with a mother tongue other than Swedish.

We have a multilingual catalog. If it is not available what the user search (parents or school teachers), we forward the loan application to International Library of Stockholm. The service is free!

  • A lot of books !!

When children do not go to the library is the library going to find them by offering a lot of books! They are sent to nursery schools by courier or with the bibliobus as spontaneous initiative of the library as a service or in the case of specific requests by schools and individual Teachers.

  • Promote the development of social skills

CHILDREN OR TEENAGERS SHY? an initiative truly special ..

READ FOR THE DOG …

Want to read for who thinks that it’s great fun to listen and does not care if your reading is not really perfect?

The initiative is addressed primarily to children and adolescents particularly timid. For several years in the United States and also in Sweden, children and adolescents are helped to solve problems of shyness through pet  therapy. In this case the participants are encouraged to read aloud to a dog trained to listen. The next meeting will be on July 25th. The reading dog Alwin will be in the lobby of the library and awaits the children available to read to him. Besides listening to some nice story it is available to be cuddled a bit . Children can read a book chosen directly in the library or just bring a book. At the end of the day, each child will receive a book as a present by Alwin.

DO AS YOU WERE AT HOME! LIBRARY AS FAMILIAR AND VITAL SPACE ..

“The uman being is what he thinks, the rest is just bones, cartilage and skin. The uman thoughts human can be found in books. So it is not unreasonable to love a book,   just like you may feel affection for a human being”.  Carl Göran Ekervald

The library provides services and cultural events that accompany the adult to develop an autonomous relationship with the book and the library … Each book comes with a barcode designed for optical reading.

  • The Bags for circle

The library promotes and supports all initiatives of adult readers, especially those who want to create independently the reading circles. The “circle bags” contain seven copies of a book (proposed by the library or from a theme chosen by the members of the circle). plus a bonus, which can be a movie, a cookbook or something else! The bonus offers books often useful to facilitate communication and report in the group. A cookbook to cook together, a book on nature to organize a trip in the woods …. The members of the club decide where and when to meet. Obviously the rooms of the library are always available. Each bag has a loan period of six weeks.

Section dedicated to local history of Jämtland

Finished the visit it appeared clearly why the library of Ӧstersund defines itself as

Ett levande Kulturhus the living house of culture

Here there is an atmosphere of “Read, please!”, but strong is the call to “Reading for pleasure …”

Reading room in the section of local history, furnished style Jamtli

Arriving in the local section of the library, we were invited to the “table of culture Jamtli” .. Sitting at that table we wondered what we could offer of “typically Italian” to our Swedish friends! To get started we shared an italian testimony …

dedicated to the Library of Ӧstersund…

.

“When I was small we did not have the television, to the movies I used to go fleetingly for not paying the ticket. I just had to read the books in the library, where you could have them free. One day I present myself to the librarian at Roncioniana in Prato, Mr. Guidenzi, “What does one do to become intelligent?” I told him. He said, “You have to read books. “What books?” “Don Chisciotte”. And I started with Don Chisciotte. Then Stern, the Gargantua, Tolstoy, Kant, and so slowly I read all the classics to the History of Philosophy by Bertrand Russell .. But the librarian Guidenzi he had also said: “Remember. We do not read to become intelligent, but to enjoy. Enjoy is the best thing in life. “And he was right, I have never forgotten. “

(Roberto Benigni “Article from suppl. weekly Corriere della sera”- Winter 91-92)

The pleasure of reading for the desire to meet the vital need for knowledge inherent in man, a pleasure that can be transmitted only by those who truly feels and it feels the need.
