April 24, 2015 Reflections on the municipal library of Ӧstersund & surroundings

If we want to synthesize in a few words what characterizes the town library of Ӧstersund, we could say that qualified staff and welcoming atmosphere and cared for in details are the added value of this living house of culture!

We caught the mission: to propose to users as a reliable reference to turn to, to meet the training needs, information and socialization. We appreciated the ability to attract not only the young audience but the entire citizenship, including the adult population.

The sharing and the exchange with the library staff has enabled us to converge on a central point, with regard to the relationship between the mission of libraries and function of lifelong learning.

The learning does not end with the completion of regular istruction but is, for most people, an activity that continues throughout life. In an increasingly complex society people will need to acquire new skills at various stages of their lives and the public library has an important role in facilitating this process.

The job shadowing activities allowed us to “see and understand” how the public library maintains its basic function of the agency open to all, able to ensure access to knowledge in the press or in other forms to support the ‘formal and informal education; in addition to grasp, first of all, its social function and aggregator

In recent guidelines IFLA / UNESCO for the development of the public library in the information society are indicated as requirements of the staff’s attitude to interpersonal relationships, knowledge of social reality, the availability teamwork, expertise and practices in the procedures of the organization they belong to..

welcoming & empathic communication

capacity for listening

awareness that the role of the librarian requires constant creation of added value, to be developed in the context of relations with the final users of information services …

these are the skills that best characterize the library staff of Ӧstersund. We have lived it as an experience …..

the challenge of the libraries of the future .. Books & modern network technologies

Marco Aurélio argued strongly that in order to become citizens of the world is not enough to accumulate knowledge; instead believed necessary to cultivate the ability to imagine sympathetically that makes it possible to understand the motivations and choices of others, who are no longer absolutely distant and different, but show to share our own problems and potentialities …

Aware of this, the library staff of Ӧstersund accompanied us in the “other languages, other cultures” to make us feel a little in Italy. And to show us through which authors and which books, the Swedes try to know us. On the shelves we found many of our Italian authors. A formidable experience for re-place us anywhere else, re-know us and re-learn the others.

Among the italian authors a special place is assigned to Giacomo Oreglia, essayist, ideologist, writer, poet. The first book to leaf through is “Rome burns.” Born in Mondovì in 1924, Oreglia had moved to Sweden in 1949. At the age of 83 years died in Stockholm. He was the largest mediator of culture between Italy and Sweden.

He introduced in the Scandinavian country the lyrics of the main poets through the publishing company “Italica”, founded by him, which made known to the Swedes, among others, the works of Salvatore Quasimodo and Eugenio Montale, both then awarded with the prestigious Nobel for Literature.

Professor Oreglia, professor of Italian literature at the Italian Cultural Institute in Stockholm, was awarded Doctor Honoris Causa by the University of the Swedish capital and has published dozens of books: From the Commedia dell’Arte to the Swedish Poetry, Comments on the Divine Comedy, Tommaso Campanella, the life and works of Dante Alighieri, Dante Anarca and his six masters, Rome burns.

In a program that wants to serve the formation of “world citizen” is literature, through its ability to represent the particular circumstances and problems of the different characters, which gives a particularly significant contribution.

As stated in the ninth chapter of Aristotle’s Poetics, the literature shows us “not what happened, but what could happen.” Being able to imagine how they could realize the potential he reveals an irreplaceable resource for political life.
