VASANELLO

Il paese dell’Alto Lazio, Vasanello, già Bassanello, ha origini antichissime che si perdono nella notte dei tempi, addirittura oltre l’epoca falisca. Fu a partire dal Medioevo, nel 1285, che gli Orsini iniziarono la costruzione del loro nobile castello edificando, a scopi difensivi, il primo torrione.

In seguito, nel 1400, la famiglia decise di trasformare il maniero adattandolo alle esigenze abitative della loro nobile casata. A tale scopo gli interni vennero rimodellati, i soffitti affrescati a cassettoni e vennero aggiunti, a scopo decorativo, fregi e motivi araldici.

Il Castello fu residenza del giovane Orso Orsini e della sua affascinante moglie, Giulia Farnese chiamata “La Bella”, amante di papa Alessandro VI Borgia e sorella del cardinale Alessandro Farnese, eletto, in seguito, pontefice con il nome di Paolo III.

Possiamo ritenere che certamente la giovane Lucrezia Borgia, figlia di Alessandro VI, abbia fatto visita e sia stata ospitata dalla sua grande amica, Giulia, andata in  sposa al Signore del luogo. A tale riguardo esiste una memoria tramandata oralmente sulla permanenza della giovane nobildonna nel castello di Vasanello.

Anche Cesare Borgia, il temutissimo Duca Valentino, fratello di Lucrezia, frequentò molto il Castello Orsini di Vasanello e, per un certo periodo, tenne sul luogo una ragguardevole guarnigione di soldati.

This town of Vasanello, formerly Bassanello, in Upper Lazio has ancient origins lost in the mists of time dating back even to the Faliscan era. It was in the Middle Ages, in 1285, that the Orsini family began construction of their noble castle, erecting the first tower for defensive purposes.

Later, in 1400, the family decided to transform the manor, adapting it to the residential needs of their noble lineage. For this pourpose, the interiors were remodeled, the coffered ceilings were frescoed, and and decorative friezes and heraldic motifs were added.

The castle was the residence of the young Orso Orsini and his charming wife, Giulia Farnese, known as “The Beautiful,” lover of Pope Alexander VI Borgia and sister of Cardinal Alessandro Farnese, later elected Pope Paul III.

We can assume that the young Lucrezia Borgia, daughter of Alexander VI, certainly visited and was hosted by her great friend, Giulia, who had married the local Lord. In this regard, there is an oral account of the young noblewoman’s stay at Vasanello Castle.

Even Cesare Borgia, the much-feared Duke Valentino, brother of Lucrezia, often visited the imposing Orsini Castle of Vasanello, where, for a certain period, he stationed a considerable garrison of soldiers.
