As evidenced by the numerous papal coats of arms adorning its entrances, towers, and two courtyards, the Rocca Albornoz, built at the behest of the powerful Spanish Cardinal Egidio Albornoz, served from 1360 onward, throughout the 15th and 16th centuries, as the seat of papal legates and popes, who sometimes temporarily chose it as their papal residence. On August 8, 1499, Gaspare dal Pozzo, Penitentiary in the Vatican Basilica and Master of the Legate’s House, delivered a papal bull to the priors in which Pope Alexander VI Borgia announced that he had appointed his noble daughter Lucrezia, Duchess of Bisceglia, to maintain the fortress and govern Spoleto and Foligno. Lucrezia stayed in the city of Spoleto as governor for a short period.
